True West by Sam Shepard
Produced by Industrial Strength Theatre
Thursday-Saturday, at 8 PM & Sunday at 3 PM
October
25-28, 2012 & November 2-4, 2012
“True
West” is a play about two brothers who find themselves together again at Mom’s house. One brother is a successful
screenwriter. The other is a petty thief. Their reunion forces each to face hard truths about
themselves and how they process the world around them.
“It
is clear, funny, naturalistic. It’s also opaque, terrifying, surrealistic. If that sounds contradictory, you’re
on to one aspect of Shepard’s winning genius; the ability to make you think you’re watching one thing while at
the same time he’s presenting another..” -San Francisco Chronicle
In an interview
with Robert Coe in New York Times Magazine, 1980, the playwright, Sam Shepard said of True West, “I wanted to write
a play about double nature...I just wanted to give a taste of what it feels like to be two-sided. It’s a real thing,
double nature. I think we’re split in a much more devastating way than psycholoty can ever really reveal. It’s
not so cute...It’s something we’ve got to live with.”
Directed
by Susan Able Barry, the show features real-life brothers Clifford and Patrick Able, as well as Rene Ruelas and Georgia Hamilton. True West contains adult language and flying kitchenware.

CHILDREN’S LETTERS TO GOD
A musical produced by Vero Voce
Saturday, September 29, 2012 @ 7:30 pm
Vero Voce School of Visual and Performing Arts in Saint Charles presents the musical “Children’s Letters
to God” featuring local children at its Black Box Theatre at 951 State Avenue, Saturday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. The
performance will be repeated on Sunday, September 30 at the Charlestowne Mall Storefront Theatre as part of the Charlie’s
Center for the Arts, a pop up arts festival in Saint Charles.
The musical, directed by Dennis Brown and Dawn Harkins,
managing directors of Vero Voce, was inspired by the international bestseller of the same name, “Children's Letters
To God” and follows the lives of nine young friends as they voice beliefs, desires, questions and doubts common to all
people. “This play has been a true learning experience for our students,” Harkins shares. “The cast members
constantly interact with each other and almost never leave the stage. They have to be ‘on’ all the time and the
music is quite challenging for young singers. The melody is rarely played and they are required to sing 3-5 part harmonies
in many places. This is a true learning experience and has given them a glimpse of how they would need to prepare for musical
theatre as an adult. I am so proud of this amazing cast for tackling this work!”
The cast includes Sarah Heylmun,
Cameron Tucker, Madeline Hotham, and Tori McKeehan of Batavia; Ashley Fritz and Abageal Phelan of Geneva; Daniel Keller of
Aurora; and Trevor Cowart and Riley Brutto of Saint Charles.
"Whimsical and charming family-oriented production about the innocent joys
and sometimes simple sorrows of growing up." - New York Daily News
"Looking for a show for kids AND adults? This one might be the answer to your
prayers!" - WCBS TV | |

Dr.
Martin Dysart, a child psychiatrist, is confronted with Alan Strang, a boy who has blinded six horses in a violent fit of
passion. This very passion is as foreign to Dysart as the act itself. To the boy's parents it is a hideous mystery; Alan has
always adored horses. To Dysart, it is a psychological puzzle that leads both doctor and patient to a complex and disturbingly
dramatic confrontation. This international success reached new acclaim in London and on Broadway when revived in 2008. Director
Bill Barry Jr leads the audience on this journey into the mind of a young man, whose passion and worship makes the examiner
question his own life's meaning.
"The closest I have seen a contemporary play come to reanimating the spirit of mystery
that makes the stage a place of breathless discovery..." --- The New York Times
